This was the inspiration behind "Granny's Green Machine," an environmental education show Cummings created that teaches children about sustainability through song, stories and puppetry.
"I want children to go green and I think the best way to get that message across is by using my theater background," said Cummings, 55, who works with regional theater companies in New Jersey. "I think songs, puppets and catchy phrases can really bring this idea home for the kids."
Cummings decided to create Granny's Green Machine in 2009 after being disappointed by the amount of environmental education her own daughter was receiving in school.
Today, Cummings brings her show to schools and libraries all over Bergen County. She will play the Northern Valley Earth Fair on April 23.
By targeting her message at children, Cummings hopes she can reach everybody.
"The more we know at an early age about protecting the environment the more easily we can change our behavior," Cummings told Daily Voice. "If children can grasp that our actions cause harm to the environment then they will come home and tell their parents and behaviors will change."
